House in Edinburgh
A former mews house dating from the first half of the 19th century has been converted into a small modern terrace dwelling. At some point, the original coach entrance had been extended with a massive conrete lintel to create a full-width garage opening. The first floor level has now been lowered to allow roughly the same height for each of the two storeys. This measure is evident in the steel channel extending across the full width of the building, creating the illusion that the façade consists of a number of shifting planes. In fact, the only movable element is the sliding garage gate.
